Tuesday, July 9, 2013—July Challenge—Day Seven—Do You Take Care of Yourself?
Do you respect yourself? Do you care for yourself? How do you dress?
I have visited some call centers in the past several years and many of the people working there especially the women are what you might call uber casual—more ready for bed than work. Because people on the other end of the phone can’t see them they are very relaxed in their appearance. Don’t they have co-workers, supervisors who may be key to promotions, family or friends? Do they go directly from bed to work without stopping at a gas station, grocery store, or any other place? Mary Kay Ash, the Mary Kay, taught her representatives to get dressed to the shoes before even making telephone calls. As I sit here this early morning, I confess I am in my nightgown but my teeth are brushed and flossed, my face is clean and moisturized, and my hair is combed.
IMG_0010I am approaching 64, my skin, hair, and teeth are in good conditions. I would like to be slimmer and firmer but my condition is not bad. Why? I want to show respect for my Creator by caring for myself. I want to show regard for my husband, family, and friends by being well groomed and decently dressed. I represent my Lord and Savior. I represent my family.
If I do not show respect for myself, how can I expect respect from others?
• How often do you shower? Is it enough to keep yourself fresh?
• Is your hair clean and combed? When was the last time you had a hair cut?
• Do you brush and floss your teeth? Do you use mouthwash? (I have a love/hate relationship with Listerine Total Care—the purple one)
• Do you clean and moisturize your skin? Do you use sunscreen?
• Did you know your eyes could be sunburned? Do you wear decent UV protectant sunglasses? Do you wear a hat to shade your eyes when out in the sun?
• Do you take care of your nails?
• Are your eyebrows groomed?
• Do you shave your under-arms and legs?
Add personal care to your daily and weekly routine. Many of these tasks can be personal pampering times.
Do you wear clothes that are clean, in good repair, and relatively wrinkle free? Your clothes don’t need to be expensive or elaborate. Dress for the task. I buy all my clothing and accessories on sale. I shop outlets and probably pay less for nice clothing than people who buy at discount stores. I try to dress decently even when cleaning toilets, washing floors, and doing laundry.
• Shop quality more than high fashion.
• Add accessories and tops in trendy colors but buy your basics in good quality neutrals that you will be able to wear from year to year.
• Be aware of your body type and dress to enhance it. http://missussmartypants.com/ is a good place to find the information you need to have a closet full of clothes you can actually wear and enjoy.
For me the first step is to take care of your health—healthy body, healthy skin, healthy hair . . .
I also find that the greatest Beautifier is the Lord. A woman full of love, grace, forgiveness, joy, and other fruit of God’s Holy Spirit is a beautiful woman no matter her age or shape. The best thing you can put on your face to look better is a smile. There are women who are model-beautiful with ugly characters. Be beautiful from the inside out.
I am not asking you to be super stylish. I am asking you to take care of yourself. If you have not been caring for yourself, start now, please. You will be healthier and at least a tad happier. You will represent yourself, your family, your business, and your Lord better.
imageToday is Tuesday—Duster Dance Day—put on some happy music, enlist the aid of any little people in your home, and swipe the dust from your flat surfaces and out the door.
imageIn this week’s Area of Focus—the Kitchen—are there any areas like the tops of your cabinets that haven’t seen a duster in a while? Many times we put decorative touches in high areas—tops of cabinets and ledges—that are left to fade and gather dust. You may need to get out your vacuum but refresh any decorative areas in your kitchen. Is the top of your refrigerator clear, a catch all, or do you have some things neatly stored there? I keep my baskets on top of my fridge. They are handy and I think they are pretty. Arrange the items on top of your fridge or cabinets and make them a display instead of clutter.
Hugs,
Mary
