40W and 60W light bulbs will not be produced after today and cannot be imported. I made a trip to Home Depot and bought a supply of light bulbs because I really do not care for the mercury vapor light bulbs that are hazardous to handle.

  1. It will not be illegal to use them, but it will be illegal for manufacturers to make and sell them. The law is called “The Energy Independence and Security Act”. 100 Watt incandescent bulbs were phased out on 01/01/2012. 75 Watt Incandescent bulbs were phased out on 01/01/2013. 60 and 40 Watt incandescent bulbs will be phased out on 01/01/2014. Specialty incandescent bulbs, such as appliance bulbs, sign bulbs, and 50/100/150 three way bulbs will still be available.

Light bulb manufacturers lobbied for this law, so they would not have to sell the less profitable incandescent bulbs anymore.

Also, starting on 01/01/2012, light bulb packaging were required to rate the light output in lumens, instead of energy use in watts.
