Creating a Cleaning Checklist

How do I create a cleaning checklist? The answer is simple—walk into each room and look around. Write down every task that needs to be done. Post a card with those tasks in a convenient but inconspicuous place in each room.

First look high:

  • Cobwebs collect in the corners.
  • Dust settles on ceiling fans
  • Light fixtures get dirty

How often do you believe your ceiling fans need to be dusted? How often do you need to check corners for cobwebs? How often do light fixtures need to be cleaned? For me most of these tasks would be scheduled monthly. If you notice they do not need to be cleaned monthly how about every other month?

Next, look around:

  • Dust settles on every surface
  • Wood furniture needs to be feed
  • Clutter needs to be dealt with
  • Crumbs and other stuff finds its way onto upholstered furniture

How often do you need to polish your furniture? How often do you need to wipe down your blinds? How often will you deal with clutter? Daily, weekly, monthly, seasonally?

Now, look down

  • Floors and baseboards, need to be swept, vacuumed, and mopped
  • Carpets need to be vacuumed and occasionally cleaned

Do you have plants that require care?

What is the purpose of each room? What takes place there?

Make note of every task that needs to take place in a room

Make a decision about how often each task needs to take place to keep you home clean and functional.

When I started I made a 3 x 5 card for each room and posted it on the corner of a mirror or on the back of a door. This also helped when I asked one of my mini assistants (aka children) to help clean a room. They could check the card to see what  tasks were required to put a room into order and to clean. Gradually these cards evolved into sheets that I keep in my household notebook in page protectors.

I am attaching a full list of my cleaning checklists. Modify them for your personal use.

Under documents on My Heart’s at Home I also have a complete list of activities. I compared lists from a variety of sources and put on my thinking cap to make a list of everything I/we do in a year.  These sheets can also help develop a cleaning checklist for each year.

What works for me may or may not work for you but I offer this as a starting place
