SOAP for February 23, 2015 God Speaking in Leviticus

IMG_0371Scripture:

Leviticus 20-22

Observation and Application

20:5-6 Worshipping other God’s in these cases by sacrificing to them or consulting spiritualists is called spiritual prostitution. We are created by and for God and are “married” to Him. Going after other gods and forms of spirituality is unfaithfulness to the One to whom we truly belong.

20:8,22 “Keep My decrees by putting them into practice . . . keep all my decrees and regulations by putting them into practice. “ Don’t just mentally agree with God’s decrees and regulations. We demonstrate our commitment to God and His decrees and regulations by doing them, by putting them into practice.

God designates actions and attitudes as capital offenses to show how very seriously He considers them. The list of capital offenses are common behaviors today.

The list of capital offenses begins with dishonoring (speaking disrespectfully) of father and mother with the penalty of death.

Other capital offenses with the penalty of death by stoning or burning are: adultery; incest; homosexuality; practicing spirituality by acting as a medium or consulting the dead, and beastiality.

  1. 23—Do not live according to the customs of the people I am driving out before you. It is because they do these shameful things that I detest them.

God’s people are set apart from all other people and cannot behave in the same way as other people.

Priests, especially the high priest were held to an even higher standard of behavior.

Prayer

My Father,

I want to live a life set apart to You. I do not want to go after other Gods or act in ways that separate me from You or dishonor You in any way. Help me to be holy. Help me to take seriously what You take seriously. Help me to value what you value. Thank You, that Jesus died to bring me forgiveness for sins I committed in ignorance. Help me to not knowingly sin.

I love You,

SOAP for February 18, 2015 Leviticus—God’s Patterns

SOAP for February 18, 2015 Leviticus—God’s Patterns

IMG_0351Scripture –Leviticus 7-8

Observation

God has patterns throughout His word. We see that the people had to present their gifts to the priests.

We see Moses anointing Aaron and his sons for serve

We see people bringing different types of sacrifices to the Lord—Guilt, Peace, Thanksgiving and Other Special sacrifices.

Every part of the Tabernacle had a purpose and a message.

Application

I need to read and study God’s word to see the trail He has given us to lead me/us to Him.

The priest represented Jesus our High Priest—He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father but by Him. (John 14:6)

For our own benefit, God wants us to honor Him. He is our Source of every good thing. We need to express worship , honor, and thanks to Him so we will know and recognize that we are not the source and there is One beyond ourselves.

The instructions and descriptions are not random or wordy but purposeful.

Prayer

My Father,

Thank Your for Your word. Thank You for the patterns You have given us as a road map to You. Help me to see, to know, to comprehend what You are saying to us beyond what is on the surface.

I love You,

SOAP for February 17, 2015—Leviticus 4-6 “If anyone sins unintentionally, they are guilty.”

SOAP for February 17, 2015—Leviticus 4-6 “If anyone sins unintentionally, they are guilty.”

IMG_0351Scripture

Leviticus 4:2– “Say to the Israelites: ‘When anyone sins unintentionally and does what is forbidden in any of the LORD’s commands—

Leviticus 4:13– 13“ ‘If the whole Israelite community sins unintentionally and does what is forbidden in any of the Lord’s commands, even though the community is unaware of the matter, when they realize their guilt 14and the sin they committed becomes known

Leviticus 4:22– 22“ ‘When a leader sins unintentionally and does what is forbidden in any of the commands of the Lord his God, when he realizes his guilt

Leviticus 4:27– “If any of the common people sin by violating one of the LORD’s commands, but they don’t realize it, they are still guilty.

Leviticus 5:15–“When anyone is unfaithful to the LORD by sinning unintentionally in regard to any of

Observation

  • When we sin, not if we sin
  • It does not matter that sin is unintentional, we are still guilty
  • Sinning is unfaithfulness to the LORD
  • When we realize our sin we must accept punishment, pay a penalty.

Application

One way sin is referred to in the Bible is as a trespass. Trespassing is crossing a boundary. Another way sin is referred to is as falling short of a standard or goal. There is a target and the goal is to hit the absolute center. When we miss that goal in even the smallest way we are coming up short of the standard. Sin is also knowing what we ought to do and not doing it. When we cross the boundaries God has defined for us, come up short of His standards for us, or choose not to do the good that we know we should do, we sin. Jesus died for that sin—He took the rightful punishment on Himself. The Bible tells us how we cross the line, miss the mark, or don’t do what is right to do—it acts as umpire.

Sin is sin whether I realize it or not—intentional or unintentional. I am guilty. Thank You, Father, for Jesus who died for my sin.  I need to know God’s heart by actively seeking after Him and reading and applying His Word in my life.

I have hidden Your Word in my heart, that I might not sin against You. Psalm 119:11

Prayer

My Father,

How can I know all the sins lurking in my heart? Cleanse me from these hidden faults. (Psalm 19:12)

My heart’s desire is to be a woman pleasing to You in all my ways. Guide me by Your Spirit. Keep my heart tender toward you that I will know and recognize sin before I take that step too far.

I love You,

SOAP for February 16, 2015 –Numbers 8 and 9, Leviticus 1-3 Patterns for Holiness

IMG_0355

Scripture

Be careful that you make everything according to the pattern I have shown you here on the mountain.

Exodus 25:40

Observation

God gives us specific patterns to follow. His directions for the Tabernacle in the Wilderness and everything in it are very specific and as we move into the descriptions for the incense and anointing oil we are instructed to not make a blend like it, to treat it as holy.

Holy means “set apart.” Holiness is being set apart for God.

Application

As believers we are God’s own people. Everyone belongs to God whether they know it or not . We were first created by Him and then bought back from the enemy who hijacked us. We are twice His. What we do with ourselves—body, soul, and spirit—is not our business only. We are His to do with as He pleases. We can accept or reject His direction but because He is the Good One, the One who knows the end from the beginning, we do so at our own peril.

Prayer

My Father,

I am Yours. I am made by You and then bought back from the power of the enemy by the precious Blood of Jesus. Help me to live in this understanding. Help me to live a set apart life, honoring You in all I am, in all I say, in all I do.

I love You,

SOAP for February 3 and 4—The Plagues

SOAP for February 3 and 4—The Plagues

IMG_0371Exodus 8 -10

1Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go to Pharaoh and say to him, ‘This is what the Lord says: Let my people go, so that they may worship me. 2If you refuse to let them go, I will send a plague of frogs on your whole country. 3The Nile will teem with frogs. They will come up into your palace and your bedroom and onto your bed, into the houses of your officials and on your people, and into your ovens and kneading troughs. 4The frogs will come up on you and your people and all your officials.’ ”

5Then the Lord said to Moses, “Tell Aaron, ‘Stretch out your hand with your staff over the streams and canals and ponds, and make frogs come up on the land of Egypt.’ ”

6So Aaron stretched out his hand over the waters of Egypt, and the frogs came up and covered the land. 7But the magicians did the same things by their secret arts; they also made frogs come up on the land of Egypt.

8Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron and said, “Pray to the Lord to take the frogs away from me and my people, and I will let your people go to offer sacrifices to the Lord.”

9Moses said to Pharaoh, “I leave to you the honor of setting the time for me to pray for you and your officials and your people that you and your houses may be rid of the frogs, except for those that remain in the Nile.”

10“Tomorrow,” Pharaoh said.

Moses replied, “It will be as you say, so that you may know there is no one like the Lord our God. 11The frogs will leave you and your houses, your officials and your people; they will remain only in the Nile.”

12After Moses and Aaron left Pharaoh, Moses cried out to the Lord about the frogs he had brought on Pharaoh.13And the Lord did what Moses asked. The frogs died in the houses, in the courtyards and in the fields. 14They were piled into heaps, and the land reeked of them. 15But when Pharaoh saw that there was relief, he hardened his heart and would not listen to Moses and Aaron, just as the Lord had said.

The Plague of Gnats

16Then the Lord said to Moses, “Tell Aaron, ‘Stretch out your staff and strike the dust of the ground,’ and throughout the land of Egypt the dust will become gnats.” 17They did this, and when Aaron stretched out his hand with the staff and struck the dust of the ground, gnats came on people and animals. All the dust throughout the land of Egypt became gnats. 18But when the magicians tried to produce gnats by their secret arts, they could not.

Since the gnats were on people and animals everywhere, 19the magicians said to Pharaoh, “This is the finger of God.” But Pharaoh’s heart was hard and he would not listen, just as the Lord had said.

The Plague of Flies

20Then the Lord said to Moses, “Get up early in the morning and confront Pharaoh as he goes to the river and say to him, ‘This is what the Lord says: Let my people go, so that they may worship me. 21If you do not let my people go, I will send swarms of flies on you and your officials, on your people and into your houses. The houses of the Egyptians will be full of flies; even the ground will be covered with them.

22“ ‘But on that day I will deal differently with the land of Goshen, where my people live; no swarms of flies will be there, so that you will know that I, the Lord, am in this land. 23I will make a distinctiona between my people and your people. This sign will occur tomorrow.’ ”

24And the Lord did this. Dense swarms of flies poured into Pharaoh’s palace and into the houses of his officials; throughout Egypt the land was ruined by the flies.

25Then Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron and said, “Go, sacrifice to your God here in the land.”

26But Moses said, “That would not be right. The sacrifices we offer the Lord our God would be detestable to the Egyptians. And if we offer sacrifices that are detestable in their eyes, will they not stone us? 27We must take a three-day journey into the wilderness to offer sacrifices to the Lord our God, as he commands us.”

28Pharaoh said, “I will let you go to offer sacrifices to the Lord your God in the wilderness, but you must not go very far. Now pray for me.”

29Moses answered, “As soon as I leave you, I will pray to the Lord, and tomorrow the flies will leave Pharaoh and his officials and his people. Only let Pharaoh be sure that he does not act deceitfully again by not letting the people go to offer sacrifices to the Lord.”

30Then Moses left Pharaoh and prayed to the Lord, 31and the Lord did what Moses asked. The flies left Pharaoh and his officials and his people; not a fly remained. 32But this time also Pharaoh hardened his heart and would not let the people go.

Observation

The plagues reflect the gods of Egypt—what they worshipped.

Application

What you worship –apart from the One True God—will be destructive to you in the end.

Prayer

My Father,

I want to worship You above all else and all others. You are the One True God. No one and no thing is worthy to be valued alongside You. Help me to keep you first place in my heart and my life. Help me to recognize when I am giving inappropriate value to any one or any thing else.

I love You,

Exodus 6:2-7

2God spoke further to Moses and said to him, “I am the LORD; 3and I appeared to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, as God Almighty, but by My name, LORD, I did not make Myself known to them. 4“I also established My covenant with them, to give them the land of Canaan, the land in which they sojourned. 5“Furthermore I have heard the groaning of the sons of Israel, because the Egyptians are holding them in bondage, and I have remembered My covenant. 6“Say, therefore, to the sons of Israel, ‘I am the LORD, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will deliver you from their bondage. I will also redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great judgments. 7‘Then I will take you for My people, and I will be your God; and you shall know that I am the LORD your God, who brought you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians.

Observation

SOAP for January 31, 2015—Job 42:1-6 Surely I Spoke of Things I Did Not Understand

IMG_0371SOAP for January 31, 2015—

Scripture

Job 42:1-6

1Then Job replied to the Lord:

2“I know that you can do all things;

no purpose of yours can be thwarted.

3You asked, ‘Who is this that obscures my plans without knowledge?’

Surely I spoke of things I did not understand,

things too wonderful for me to know.

4“You said, ‘Listen now, and I will speak;

I will question you,

and you shall answer me.’

5My ears had heard of you

but now my eyes have seen you.

6Therefore I despise myself

and repent in dust and ashes.”

Observation

My ears had heard of you but now my eyes have seen you.

When we see God, we see how very wrong we sometimes are about Him. When we do see Him as He is, we are ashamed of ourselves—our words, our attitudes, our actions.

Application

I want to actively seek to see God and not just to hear about Him.

Prayer

My Father,

I confess again how wrongly I have perceived You. As I  look into Your Word I see Who You are. Again, You are my Creator, the Creator of all that is. I fearfully admit You have the right to use me as You will. You are good and I will trust You. Help me to see You and hear You in truth and follow closely after You.

I love You,

SOAP for January 30, 2010–Job 40:1-5– I Need to Cover My Mouth

IMG_0371SOAP for January 30, 2010

Scripture

Job 40:1-5

1Then the LORD said to Job,

2“Will the faultfinder contend with the Almighty?
Let him who reproves God answer it.”

3Then Job answered the LORD and said,

4“Behold, I am insignificant; what can I reply to You?
I lay my hand on my mouth.

5“Once I have spoken, and I will not answer;
Even twice, and I will add nothing more.”

Observation

God is very direct. He doesn’t hold back. He made us. He has a right to direct us, to test us.

Job has been accusing God of being unfair throughout this account of the events of his life.

Application

I am guilty of time and time again of accusing God of being unfair, unkind, unloving to me. With Job I need to cover my mouth.

Prayer

My Father,

I confess that I sin in accusing You of being unfair to me. I am Yours and You are right in doing as You please with me. But you are fairer than I know, kinder than I know, more loving than I know. Help me to see Your goodness and to accept Your actions in my life as right and good.

SOAP January 14, 2015 The LORD Prospers Joseph

IMG_0371Scripture

Genesis 39:2-3

The LORD was with Joseph, so he succeeded in everything he did as he served in the home of his Egyptian master. 3Potiphar noticed this and realized that the LORD was with Joseph, giving him success in everything he did.

Genesis 39:21-23

But the LORD was with Joseph in the prison and showed him his faithful love. And the LORD made Joseph a favorite with the prison warden.22Before long, the warden put Joseph in charge of all the other prisoners and over everything that happened in the prison. 23The warden had no more worries, because Joseph took care of everything. The LORD was with him and caused everything he did to succeed.

Observation

(2)The LORD was with Joseph so he succeeded in everything he did.

Potiphar noticed that Joseph caused the affairs of his household to go well.
